Dr. Reginald Jarrell, instructor of communications at Southwestern College and author of 31 Days (Nights): Memoir of Living Black in America will present at the October meeting of The Friends of the Winfield Public Library. This free event, held Monday, October 10 at 7:00pm, is open to the public.
Jarrell’s book, published earlier this year by Blue Cedar Press in Wichita, KS, is a collection of snapshots in the form of essays. Both the book and his presentation draw on his life as a journey of reflection, revelation, and inspiration.
“After the birth of my first two grandchildren, which occurred three days apart, my wife (Canetha) indicated to me that I should write something so they know who I am,” Jarrell says. “I thought that was a good idea because there are a number of stories that my children haven’t even heard about. If the children don’t know, certainly the grandchildren won’t know.”
Jarrell has worked as a pastor, lawyer, communications professional, and university professor. He has lived and worked in Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, and Rock Island. His writing shares scenes from these vast and varied life experiences, and reflects on the nature of racial sensitivity and how race affects interpersonal behavior.
31 Days (Nights): Memoir of Living Black in America is available to check out at WPL. Copies will also be available to purchase following Jarrell’s presentation.
