Program Description

Description

Winfield Public Library invites community members to attend “Climate Change and You,” a presentation coordinated by the Master Gardeners of K-State Research and Extension Wyandotte County.  Presented by Frank Reilly, Senior Consultant at Logistics Management Institute, this talk addresses the realities and challenges of gardening in a changing climate.

Attendees will be challenged to think about plant choices that are sustainable and beneficial to home landscape.  Other topics that will be addressed include planning for changes that can increase storm damage and storm debris, shifts in temperature that may bring the release of new pests and diseases, and changes in amounts and timing of precipitation.

In addition to the Zoom presentation, Master Gardeners from our local KSRE office will be present to answer questions about local gardening practices, plant choices and more.  Becky Reid, local Extension Agent, will also lead a hands-on activity.

WPL is currently hosting “Climate and Energy Central,” a traveling exhibit from the Kauffman Museum at Bethel College that features Kansas scientists who are working together to address the grand challenges of renewable energy and potential climate change.  Featuring large scale graphics, photo murals, and a real selection of a center pivot irrigation system, the modular displays create an immersive environment that brings to life Kansas scientists and the work they are doing.
