The news about climate change seems to go from bad to worse. But Dr. Rick Cowlishaw, Professor of Biology at Southwestern College, says that there is good news about climate change, too. Wildfires, droughts, floods, melting of sea and land ice, sea-level rise, extreme and catastrophic weather events, cyclone bombs, megastorms – all of these are signs of a rapidly changing climate.
“It can be overwhelming and frightening to the point that you feel an inevitability about it, that nothing can be done,” says Cowlishaw. “The good news is that we know exactly what must be done, and we already have everything we need to do it.”
Cowlishaw will be presenting a free workshop at Winfield Public Library on Sunday, May 1st at 1:30pm. All are welcome to this event, where Cowlishaw will explore climate change solutions using a powerful online simulation model called En-ROADS.
“The things we value as individuals connect to how people – and environments – all around the world are impacted by climate change,” says Cowlishaw. “The En-ROADS workshop helps us make those connections between our values and the opportunities available to ensure a resilient future.”
WPL is currently hosting “Climate and Energy Central,” a traveling exhibit from the Kauffman Museum at Bethel College that features Kansas scientists who are working together to address the grand challenges of renewable energy and potential climate change. Featuring large scale graphics, photo murals, and a real selection of a center pivot irrigation system, the modular displays create an immersive environment that brings to life Kansas scientists and the work they are doing. The exhibit is made possible by a grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities. American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2022.
