Description

Kent Melcher, a Winfield resident and history enthusiast, will present “The Civil War: it began in Kansas” at 6:30pm on Thursday, September 12.

From 1856 to 1858 Kansas was the site of some of the earliest violent clashes leading to the Civil War. Melcher will discuss the causes of these clashes and their significance for the state of Kansas and the entire nation.

“The political climate was a key factor in starting the war,” says Melcher, “and Kansas was right at the center of it.”

Melcher will also present at the WPL Friends of the Library meeting on Monday, September 9 at 7:00pm. At that time, he will share how a family connection to the Battle of Chickamauga inspired his research into the Civil War.
