Description

The Winfield Public Library invites community members to join the Bookn’ with Friends book talk on Monday, January 24th at 6:30pm. This month’s book selection is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman. Participants must register for this discussion by visiting wpl.org or calling 620-221-4470. Copies of the book are currently available at WPL’s circulation desk.

Selected to meet the January 2022 Reading Challenge of “a First Book in a Series,” The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax was first published in 1966; an additional 13 books featuring the title character have been published since then.  The book is 204 pages long, and has a 4 star rating on goodreads.  From the publisher:

Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was a widow with grown children.  She was tired of attending her Garden Club meetings.  She wanted to do something good for her country.  So, naturally, she became a CIA agent.  She takes on a job in Mexico City.  The assignment doesn’t sound dangerous at first, but then, as often happens, something goes wrong.  Now our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroiled in quite a hot Cold War – and her country’s enemies find themselves entangled with one unbelievably feisty lady.

Bookn’ with Friends book talks are hosted by the Friends of the Winfield Public Library.  This group supports library activities such as the Summer Reading Program and the Discovery exhibits.  For those who believe in literacy programs, love the library and wish to support strong community, membership in The Friends is a great way to show support.
