All are welcome! Join us in 2020 as we celebrate award-winning books!  Piecing Me Together, winner of the Coretta Scott King Book Award, tells the story of Jade as she tries to find her place.  This book is a perfect length - 264 pages - for a quick read as we near the holidays.  Sign up below to receive a Zoom link for the discussion.  Books will be available for curbside 30 days before the talk; call to schedule a time.

"Acclaimed author Renee Watson offers a powerful story about a girl striving for success in a world that too often seems like it's trying to break her. Jade believes she must get out of her poor neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother tells her to take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way. And Jade has: every day she rides the bus away from her friends and to the private school where she feels like an outsider, but where she has plenty of opportunities. But some opportunities she doesn't really welcome, like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Just because her mentor is black and graduated from the same high school doesn't mean she understands where Jade is coming from. She's tired of being singled out as someone who needs help, someone people want to fix. Jade wants to speak, to create, to express her joys and sorrows, her pain and her hope. Maybe there are some things she could show other women about understanding the world and finding ways to be real, to make a difference."

The 2020 Reading Challenge book for November is a book written by an author of a different race, ethnicity or religion than your own - find out more about author Renee Wilson to see if Piecing Me Together would qualify as your November Challenge book.

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.  The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood. –ala.org
